MB’s story

15 February 2021

MB had served in the forces during the IRA’s mainland bombing campaign and had witnessed the aftermath of some horrific incidents.  On leaving the service she suffered terrible nightmares, with repeated flashbacks to her time in service. She was unable to sleep, losing confidence and struggling to fit into any social group. On learning that she kept horses as a child, The Veterans’ Farm-Able Foundation arranged placements for her at a Dartmoor riding stables. She was able to ride and groom a favourite horse and enjoyed a communal daily lunch round a big table. She says “I was taking wonderful memories home and they began to replace the horrific flashbacks. Knowing I could beat the nightmares, I felt at ease and content at last.”
